the silent anxiety many women carry

It is one of the most common worries women experience at some stage in their life, yet one of the least openly discussed due to stigma and shame:

Many women quietly carry anxiety about intimate odour for years without ever mentioning it to friends, partners or even doctors. The fear is often not about illness, but about stigma and lack of confidence.

Unlike conversations about skincare, haircare or fitness, intimate odour remains surrounded by embarrassment and silence. Many women become hyperaware of themselves during close physical contact, after exercise, at work, while dating, or even simply wearing fitted clothing. Some change underwear multiple times a day or avoid intimacy altogether because of fear and self-consciousness.

The genital area contains sweat glands, natural bacteria, moisture and oils, so expecting it to smell like nothing at all is unrealistic. It has a natural scent, just like every other part of the body.
The reality is that intimate scent does changes throughout life: Hormones, sweat, menstrual cycles, stress, exercise, sex, menopause and even synthetic fabrics can all influence odour.

Menopause is another major contributor that is rarely discussed openly. Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can alter skin hydration, sweating patterns, pH balance and tissue sensitivity. Women who never worried about intimate odour earlier in life may suddenly notice changes they do not understand. Many feel shocked or embarrassed because nobody prepared them for these shifts.

What makes the issue particularly difficult is the emotional weight attached to it. Intimate odour is tied to ideas of femininity, attractiveness, cleanliness and ageing. Even mild or completely normal changes can deeply affect confidence and self-esteem. Women often feel isolated in these experiences because the subject is still treated as taboo.

For many of us, the real desire is not to smell like flowers or fragrance. It is simply to feel comfortable, confident and secure in their own skin again.

Women do not need more shame-based messaging or products that imply their bodies are inherently “unclean.”

The conversation around intimate care deserves to be more open, compassionate and realistic. Just as importantly, it should be free from embarrassment and shame. We have come a long way in normalising conversations about periods, and it is time to extend that same understanding to other experiences women face throughout life, from hormonal changes to pelvic floor concerns and everything in between.

With the launch of The Reset Mist, DermPhase hopes to help start that conversation.

Not because intimate odour is something to be ashamed of, but because it is something many women experience and rarely talk about.
We hope Reset Mist encourages women to share their stories, support one another, and find comfort in knowing they are not alone. Because the realities of being a woman are not always glamorous, but they are shared, understood, and often worth laughing about together.
