The hidden burden of bladder leaks

The hidden burden of bladder leaks

For many women, one of the most distressing parts of urine leaks is not the leakage itself - it is the fear of odour.

The worry can become constant and exhausting. Women may find themselves checking clothing repeatedly, avoiding sitting too close to others, carrying spare underwear everywhere, or withdrawing from social and intimate situations altogether. Even very small leaks can create significant anxiety because of the fear that someone else might notice a smell.

Yet despite how common this experience is, very few women talk openly about it.

Urine leakage affects women of all ages. It can happen after childbirth, during exercise, throughout peri-menopause and menopause, after pelvic surgery, or simply as part of ageing. Some women experience occasional leaks when coughing, laughing or running. Others notice light but frequent leakage throughout the day. Even minimal dampness trapped against the skin can create discomfort and odour over time, especially in warm weather or while wearing synthetic clothing.

What many women do not realise is that the odour is often not simply “urine.” When moisture sits on the skin for prolonged periods, it interacts with sweat, skin bacteria and body heat. This combination can create a stronger and more persistent smell than urine alone. The vulval area is naturally warm and occluded, so moisture retention can quickly affect both skin comfort and confidence.

The emotional impact is often far greater than people assume. Many women describe feeling embarrassed, ashamed or “unclean,” even though urinary leakage is an extremely common medical and hormonal issue. In response, some avoid exercise classes, long meetings, travel or dating because they fear odour or visible dampness.

Many women begin over-cleansing or using heavily fragranced products in an attempt to cover odour entirely. Unfortunately, heavily fragranced products may cause irritation. harsh cleansing can damage the skin barrier, increase irritation and disrupt the delicate balance of the microbiome, sometimes making discomfort even worse.

The conversation around bladder leaks is often focused on pads and protection, but far less attention is given to the emotional burden women carry every day. The fear of smelling of urine can quietly erode confidence and affect intimacy, social connection and self-esteem.

Women deserve more compassionate conversations around intimate care and bladder leakage.

They deserve products that support comfort and dignity without shame-based messaging or unrealistic expectations. The conversation needs to educate about gentle cleansing, moisture management, skin barrier support and helping women feel comfortable in their bodies again.

Most importantly, women need to hear that they are not alone. Urine leakage is common, and the anxiety surrounding odour is far more widespread than most people realise. Speaking about it openly is not embarrassing - it is necessary.
